Reference List

Reference List Basics

  • Separate page at the end of your paper
  • The words Reference List are centered at the top of the paper
  • Sources are listed alphabetically by author's last name
  • Use a hanging indent of 1/2 inch (this is the second and subsequent lines for each citation)(see below)
  • All in-text citations must have a matching full citation in the Reference List

The elements and formatting for your citation changes slightly depending on what type of source you are citing and where it came from. For a complete list with examples of how to cite your particular type of source, check out Excelsior's Online Writing Lab list of Reference List examples.

Examples of Journal Article formatting:

  • Author, A. A., Author, B.B. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages. https://doi.org/xxxx/xxxxx
A DOI stands for Document Object Identifier and provides a permanent "address" to the article. If an article has a DOI, add it to the reference.

  • Author, A.A., Author, B.B. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages. http://someaddress.com/full/url
If an article is found online, doesn't have a DOI, or is not in a database, include the address.
If your source is from a web page, end your citation this way: Retrieved month day, year, from http://someaddress.com/full/url

  • Author, A.A., Author, B.B. (Year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, volume number(issue number), pages. Retrieved from _____database.
If an article is found within a database, include "Retrieved from [name of database] database."  APA does not require the name of the database to be added but if the article is hard to find otherwise it is perfectly acceptable. Your professor would appreciate the database information!
