Free Speech in Teaching and Learning

Chesapeake College embraces the free expression and exchange of ideas within the realm of the  academic process (teaching and learning and research) as the essence of higher education. As a  community, we collectively cultivate critical thinking in the pursuit of academic excellence. Real  intellectual change comes from hard work and honest conversations, but that work does not threaten,  harass or incite violence. To this end, we inform through teaching, discover through research,  persuade through debate, and consider through discussion.  Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to  share thoughts, ideas and opinions in the spirit of diversity and show respect for differences in a  civilized manner. As a community, we are committed to protecting the free expression of others,  regardless of our personal support or opposition to those ideas. With these actions, we create an  environment for intellectual and personal growth.
